SaladsSalads can be a good way to get your daily nutrients. However, not all salads are healthy or nutritious. It depends on what is in the salad. If you have plenty of fresh vegetables in the salad, then you are getting healthy, disease-fighting nutrients. Darker colored vegetables are generally healthier. Beware of dressings, oils, or mayonnaise in your salads. Croutons, bacon bits, and cheese significantly increase the amount of calories in a salad.

Whole Grains

Whole GrainsWhole grains provide a healthy boost of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients and are also rich in carbohydrates, the body’s main fuel supply—no wonder we need to eat more grains. In fact, the 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults consume around six ounces of grains daily, and that we make half those grains whole. Brown rice just recently joined the ranks of healthful whole grains recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Start your day with whole-grain muffins or yogurt topped with granola; try hearty salads with wheat berries or quinoa; swap out white rice or potatoes for sides of brown rice at dinner tonight.

Meatless Meals
Meatless MealsWhen you eat a plant-based diet, which emphasizes fruits and vegetables, grains, beans and legumes, and nuts, you increase fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. And people who eat only plant-based foods — aka vegetarians — generally eat fewer calories and less fat, weigh less, and have a lower risk of heart disease and other diseases than non-vegetarians do. When you eat less meat, you will find that it has a protective effect. So eating less meat using DeLand Natural Market resipies can be healthy with great taste.

Soups have been in existence since ancient times. Some soups are served with large chunks of meat or vegetables left in the liquid, while a broth type would be considered a flavored liquid usually derived from boiling a type of meat, vegetable or bone for an extensive period of time in a stock.  Soups can range from having a thick consistency to being light and clear whereby the use of a spoon would not be needed.

Soups can fall into several categories:

Thick soups for example can be like the Creole style with sausage and potato or like Georgian soups with lamb and vegetables. Other similar styles can be more stew like which are so favored during the cold winter months.
Cold soups just to name a few can be similar to Bulgarian soups which are made of yogurt and cucumbers to Spanish tomato soups. These soups are lighter and very popular over the summer and warmer months of the year.  A very popular summer selection is the carrot soup.

Other classifications can fall under the title of Fish soups which can consist of chowders or bisques.  More elegance types would be hearty chowders made from cream and potatoes and variations of the lobster bisque.  The list is endless.

What is an appetizer? Well, they can consist of almost anything anymore. As for when they
are most commonly presented, it is usually during the wait time between when guests arrive
and the main meal is served. Another example would be during a specifically designed cocktail
hour or social hour. Appetizers can also serve the purpose of building the anticipation of a
spoke about meal which could also have an aroma permeating in the kitchen while guests are
enjoying that socialization time with each other. In some cases appetizers are served alone and
with no anticipation of a meal afterward. In other cases where you might see this are at many
reception and cocktail party events where themes are very common.

Appetizers may be served at the main table, side table or served and passed around by servers
on decorative trays. Regardless of how, they are always served before sitting at the main table.
Whatever the specifics are, always, think of using appetizers as a great way to get guests in the
mood for that wonderful main meal.

MeatThe terms "grass fed" and "pasture raised"—meaning that an animal was allowed to graze the old-fashioned way instead of being fed an unnatural and difficult-to-digest diet of mostly corn and other grain. Now that we have our grass feed none steroid animal we have to find out where certain cuts come from:

A roast is a cut of beef, thicker than two inches, that is suitable for cooking by dry heat on a rack in a shallow open pan in the oven or in a covered grill (indirect heat).

Pot roasts also come from the fore- and hindquarters of the carcass. These muscles are more heavily exercised and contain more connective tissue, making them less tender.

One of the homiest comfort foods, beef stew practically cooks itself as it slowly simmers on the stove. Beef for stew is boneless, pre-cut cubes, typically from the chuck or round.

Then we have the best part of the animal the rib or loin sections otherwise known as steaks. Steaks are usually cooked over a dry heat like a BBQ or a flat iron pan.

Desserts & After Dinner
Desserts & After DinnerDessert is usually the last course that concludes a meal.  A dessert can be anything within reason including one combining several ingredients but neither of which would be limited to a sweet taste. In western cultures dessert can be defined by a wide variety of choices like cakes, pastries, ice creams, to majestic trifles. Some cultures include sweet coffees and dessert wines which is not uncommon because of their natural sweetness. Many different cultures around the world have their own variations of similar desserts.  For Example in Russia and eastern European countries they actually have desserts for breakfast. The Deli, at DeLand Natural Market tends to stay on the healthy side when it comes to dessert choices.  They also take into consideration the simple task of using desserts just to cleanse the customer’s palette.
